Throughout the world, and especially in America, ultra-processed and fast foods are the majority of our diet. Even with a “healthy” diet of fruits and vegetables, most of what we consume is ultra-processed or chemically altered. This may not seem like a very important thing to consider, but what do you think these alterations do to our body?
We already know it’s fattening and unhealthy, but studies show that they’re also connected to cancer.
Ultra-processed foods include lots of ingredients and chemicals not found in a kitchen, but a lab, a study was shown by the World Cancer Research Fund that proved that each 10% of ultra-processed foods is linked to a person’s increased chance of cancers. It can multiply the number of cancerous cells in your body and make you sick.
This being said, in a world where the majority of what we have to eat is made up of these additives and chemicals what are we supposed to do?
There are several ways to reduce your likelihood of cancer, and your overall health. Start by eating less sugary and fatty foods. Sugars and fats are essential for your diet, however the amount a typical US citizen eats is well above the recommended.
Start eating more fruits and vegetables, preferably from your own garden. Even some store-bought veggies can have these additives, but even if they do it has less of the other harmful ingredients and can help you stay healthy. Only 12% of the American diet involves vegetables. If you look at the guideline for safe eating, vegetables should be at least a fourth – 25% – of your meal.
We can’t guarantee a healthy body by eating well, but we can decrease the chances of dangerous diseases and illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, and so much more.
