On March 28th, Governor Bill Lee signed Bill SB 0897, prohibiting wireless communications devices during ‘instructional time’ in schools.
This includes cell phones, laptops, and gaming devices.
Students may only use their phones in class to manage their health or meet disability requirements, or if permitted by a teacher for a lesson.
The bill applies to grades K-12 and will take effect on July 1st, starting in the 2025-2026 school year. Local school boards across the state are required to issue policies by the time of this date.
Georgia, among other states, are expecting to pass similar bills, at least eight other states already have bills signed into law.
