With the new school year roaming in full force, there have been numerous threats and fatal acts against many schools across the southeast. From explosives to firearms, to knives, the threats seem to end in one way; an arrest for the perpetrator. With more students in schools than ever, there seem to be more and more threats to our schools.
During the first 8 weeks of this school year, there have already been 32 reported threats. While 32 might seem like a minuscule amount compared to the number of students there are, we are already on pace for the most threats in the past decade. The previous two years have both stayed under 100 threats, but at this rate, we will have more threats than the last 2 years combined. Below is a graph of the threats of the last three years, as well as the projected amount of threats this year.
The students creating these threats have faced the consequences of their actions. There have already been 22 arrests for these crimes, convicted of charges of threats of mass violence. This is a class E misdemeanor and results in an average of 220 days in prison. These crimes will stay with you for the rest of your life, making it much more difficult to find jobs and get support from others such as loans or scholarships.
